WHY ISDF EXISTS

Preserve the art.

01 / DISCOVER THE SPORT

Find your flow.

Skiing has a rhythm.
Share it.

Snowdancing is easy, rhythmic skiing—ankle-initiated turns, smooth carving, natural edge transitions, and floating control across ever-changing snow.

In pairs, that feeling becomes a conversation: two skiers connecting turns, timing, and creative movement. ISDF is bringing people together to explore what skiing can be when expression is part of the experience.

02 / THEN, NOW & WHAT’S NEXT

A creative legacy. A fresh chapter.

The mountain has
always been a stage.

Ski ballet brought choreography and personality to freestyle skiing—and appeared as a demonstration sport at the 1988 Calgary and 1992 Albertville Winter Olympics.

ISDF celebrates that legacy while looking forward: pairs snowdancing, synchronized performance, and new ways to learn, participate, and connect.

A shared next chapter

ISDF puts pairs snowdancing at the heart of education, exhibitions, and community.

The pioneers made their own tracks.

Suzy Chaffee brought a dancer’s approach to the mountain. Alan Schoenberger blended skiing with mime and theatrical storytelling. Bob Howard and Lane Spina expanded the vocabulary of spins and acrobatics. Together with many others, they showed how much expression could fit into one run.

ISDF carries that spirit into pairs snowdancing: shared rhythm, flowing turns, and room to create. Ski ballet, pairs, and synchronized skiing each contribute something to the same creative family.

DAN / KEEPING THE SPIRIT ALIVE

Meet Dan “The Budman.”

For more than 40 years, Dan Shannon has made playful, expressive skiing part of his life. His distinctive jackets and larger-than-life on-snow personality are part of the story. Today he brings that same energy to ISDF’s Olympic dream.

By his own count, Dan has spent more than 3,000 days on skis, explored over 100 resorts across 14 countries, and skied without poles since 1980. That is a lot of turns—and a lifetime of stories. Dan’s story and ski totals ↗

Dan appeared as an extra in the “Chinese Downhill” sequence of the 1984 ski classic Hot Dog… The Movie. It is another connection between his own story and the exuberant hot-dogging era that helped shape freestyle skiing. Explore Hot Dog… The Movie on Apple TV ↗

ADRIAN / AN ORIGINAL SNOWDANCER

Meet Adrian Floreani.
Still finding a new way to turn.

Adrian is one of the original snowdancers: a skier, instructor, and inventor whose love of movement connects the sport’s early days to its next chapter. He and Dan met at Mammoth in 1986. That shared history continues today through snowdancing and FloSkis, the company Adrian founded.

His company biography traces his path from skiing the Colorado Rockies to aerospace engineering at NASA. FloSkis describes how his work with vibration damping inspired an on-snow question: could a ski absorb chatter while keeping the freedom to bend and turn? Years of prototypes led to his combination of bamboo-core skis, a flexing riser, and the FloShocks stabilizer.

Adrian’s focus is getting people onto the skis so they can feel the difference for themselves. He wants beginners to enjoy learning and return to the mountain, and intermediates to rediscover progress. His October 2026 plans include short 125 cm teaching skis and a new 160 cm design, with demos and instructor feedback central to the next step.

THE BIG DREAM / 2030 + 2034

ISDF GOAL

A big dream.
An Olympic future.

Our dream is to bring snowdancing to the Olympic stage in France in 2030 and Salt Lake City–Utah in 2034.

Founder Dan Shannon’s ambition gives ISDF a clear direction: grow participation, develop education and performance opportunities, and build international relationships that can help the sport move toward Olympic recognition.

7 MILLION VIEWS. A BIGGER DREAM.

Help us reach 20 million more.

Snowdancing videos have already generated more than 7 million views in 2026. Help us turn that attention into a movement toward our 2030 and 2034 Olympic dream.

Our goal: 20 million additional video views by October 2028. Through social media, influencer collaborations, and shared snowdancing stories, we’re inviting more people to discover the sport, try it, and support its future.

Share a video, introduce a creator, or connect us with a resort, instructor, or sponsor to help the movement grow.

2026 views reported by ISDF. The two-year goal measures additional video views, including repeat viewing—not unique people. October 2028 is our outreach horizon.

LEARN / EXPLORE / EXPRESS YOURSELF

You’re never too old
to learn something new.

A new way to enjoy the mountain—at your own pace.

ISDF is developing demonstrations, introductory clinics, and partnerships with instructors to help people of all ages and genders explore snowdancing and ski ballet. Start with balance, flowing turns, and rhythm; build toward creative movement and shared timing.

Come on your own, with a friend, or with your partner. Learning opportunities will be matched to skiing ability, terrain, and conditions. Adrian’s teaching experience helps connect the fundamentals to the fun.

Tracy Dee Lufkin wearing her cowboy hat and red Bud jacket on the deck

Tracy Dee’s story

Tracy Dee grew up in Wyoming and Idaho skiing with her family, especially her hot-dog uncles and her grandpa. His lifelong dream was to turn 80 and finally earn his free ski pass—only for the resort to eliminate the program just as he reached that milestone! Skiing, family, and a little irreverent humor have always gone together for her.

Her years in Utah brought a new love: fresh powder in the trees, trailing the “Bark Buster” pros and learning to love the turns between the trunks. She still enjoys a fast downhill run, but those days helped her discover just how many ways there are to play on a mountain.

After exploring snowdancing off and on for two to three years, she has found another reason to love skiing: variety, creativity, and the freedom to mix different ways of moving on snow.

As a learning and development professional, she sees a connection between trying something unfamiliar on skis and staying curious in life and work. You can bring years of experience—and still enjoy being a beginner at something new.

Expression on snow has a long history.

For its 2023 ski collection, BOGNER drew inspiration from Willy Bogner Jr.’s 1966 film Skifascination. Its “Romancing the Snow” collection film brings that playful spirit into a modern celebration of style, ski ballet, and creative movement.

EQUIPMENT CONNECTION / FLOSKIS

Designed to flex. Built for exploration.

Adrian’s designs combine a bamboo core, carbon-fiber construction, and a flexing binding riser. FloSkis describes its optional FloShocks stabilizer as ball bearings moving in oil to absorb vibration and chatter.

Explore the models with Adrian, then choose suitable equipment and lesson arrangements with your provider or instructor.

Models & design details

In October 2026, Adrian reported 125 cm, 150 cm, and 163 cm skis, plus plans for a new performance-focused 160 cm design. He describes the 163 cm as a longer, more stable option for intermediate and expert applications. The earlier 160 cm ski shown here is not the new design in development.

The binding riser is designed to preserve ski flex and allow fore-and-aft positioning. Adrian’s proposed name is FloRiser; the current FloSkis website calls it the Full-Flex Riser. Confirm current model specifications, bindings, and trial availability with Adrian.
